Brian Woods BA (TP) MRTPI Managing Director
Brian Woods BA (TP) MRTPI Brian worked for five Local Planning Authorities culminating as Head of Development Control for Runnymede Borough Council. He was subsequently Planning Manager at a Commercial Property Company, Associate at a Planning Consultancy and now Managing Director of WS Planning, which was formed in 1992. He has gained over 30 years of experience in planning. Brian has acted as an expert planning witness at Public Inquiries for a wide range of clients.

Spencer Copping BA (Hons) Dip TP MRTPI Director
Spencer Copping BA (Hons) Dip TP MRTPI Spencer joined WS Planning in January 1999 after completing his four year planning degree and diploma at Oxford Brookes University. He became a Member of the RTPI in April 2001 and appointed Director at WS Planning in January 2006.

In addition to handling a wide variety of planning related projects including residential, commercial and agricultural related planning work for the Private sector, Spencer has also represented Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, Sevenoaks District Council and Waverley Borough Council at a number of Hearings and Inquiries.


Colin Smith BA (Hons) MRTPI Director
Colin Smith BA (Hons) MRTPI Colin is member of the RTPI and has 20 years of experience working in development control. He worked at Reigate and Banstead Borough Council for 7 years as a planning assistant, before moving to Sevenoaks District Council in 1997. At Sevenoaks, Colin held positions of Senior Planning Officer and Area Planning Officer, dealing with planning applications for the redevelopment of part of Sevenoaks town centre and the Grand Prix circuit at Brands Hatch.

Most recently Colin held the position of Service and Performance Manager at Sevenoaks, responsible for reviewing and improving the performance of the development control function.

Since joining WS Planning, Colin has acted for a wide range of clients in securing planning permissions and carrying out development appraisals. He has represented both Local Authorities and private clients at appeals.


Alan Tompson BA(Hons) PG Dip.Arch ARB Director
Alan Tompson BA(Hons) PG Dip.Arch ARB Alan studied Architecture at the University of Plymouth, East London & Westminster University and became a Fully Qualified Architect 1998 having gained experience in Munich & London on various residential, commercial and schools projects.

He continued to work in private practice on numerous award winning public & private residential schemes and was later head hunted to work for a regional housing developer as their Design Architect.

In 2004 he became the Planner Manager for a medium sized house builder and helped develop their reputation for quality developments ranging from bespoke one off luxury homes to family dwellings and superior collections of apartments in South East England. He was key in liaising with LPA’s & External Consultants in resolving complicated planning and technical issues within Brownfield sites, developing feasibility studies to obtain planning application approvals and value engineered developed schemes.

Alan became a Director of WS Planning in June 2010 and leads the WS Planning Urban Design Section. He provides advice and expertise aswell as bespoke solutions for our clients Architectural needs.


Maggie Williams BEd (Hons) PG Dip RTPI DMS Principal Planner
Maggie Williams BEd (Hons) PG Dip RTPI DMS Maggie started her planning career as a Planning Assistant at Reigate and Banstead Borough Council in 1990 where she dealt with minor planning applications and became a member of the RTPI in 1994. In 1996 Maggie joined Rushmoor Borough Council as a Principal Planning Officer where she dealt with major applications and was responsible for the Council’s Planning Enforcement Service. Maggie moved to Horsham District Council in 2000 working in Development Control, before joining Sevenoaks District Council in 2002 as the Planning Policy Team Leader where she was responsible for the project management of the Council’s Local Development Framework During her time at Sevenoaks, Maggie specialised in rural planning and was a member of KCC’s Rural Regeneration Team. At Sevenoaks Maggie also assisted with the preparation of the Council’s Community Strategy and was actively involved in corporate consultation projects including “Planning for Real” exercises.

At WS Planning Maggie leads on the planning policy side of the business. She has project managed the preparation of Site Appraisals and Scoping Reports to ascertain sustainability of sites to promote for inclusion in Local Development Frameworks. She has attended the SE Plan EIP and represents clients at LDF Examinations in Public. Recently Maggie project managed a Housing Needs survey carried out in support of “Rural Exception” housing scheme which was granted planning permission by Tandridge District Council.


Kate Jackson BA(Hons) MSc MRTPI Principal Planner
Kate Jackson BA(Hons) MSc MRTPI Kate is a Chartered Town Planner with 12 years experience Private Practice. She began her career with WS Planning in 1995 and re-joined in December 2007 after working as a Senior Planner in the Environmental Management Team at Mott MacDonald Ltd and also working as a sole practitioner.

Kate's work has been varied and includes residential, commercial, waste and major infrastructure projects. She has a wide range of project management experience with regard to Planning and Environmental Impact Assessment.


Julian Sharpe BSc (Hons) Dip TP MRTPI Senior Planner
Julian Sharpe BSc (Hons) Dip TP MRTPI Julian completed a BSc in Urban Planning Design and Management at UCL in 2005. He then went on to complete a Diploma in Town and Country Planning at UCL specialising in Urban Design in 2007. Julian joined WS Planning in 2005 and became a chartered member of the RTPI in March 2009.

Julian’s work primarily involves carrying out site appraisals, submitting a variety of planning applications and handling planning and enforcement appeals. He has also represented clients at informal hearings.

Julian supports the Directors on more larger and complex cases and also assists the LDF team in preparing scoping reports and making LDF representations. Julian has worked on several applications and appeals relating the provision of Gypsy and Traveller sites in the South East for both private clients and a Local Planning Authority.


Alex Moseley BA (Hons) MA Planner
Alex Moseley BA (Hons) MA Alex has recently successfully completed a Masters in Town Planning at the University of Westminster. Alex has followed in his father’s footsteps in becoming a Town Planner and joined our team in August 2005. He is now looking to complete his qualifications and become a full member of the Royal Town Planning Institute.

Alex’s principle role is carrying out Development Control duties for Epsom and Ewell Borough Council and previously carried out a similar role for Tunbridge Wells Borough Council.

Alex also undertakes a wide variety of work, including preparation of planning applications, appeal statements and assists senior members of the company at planning inquiries.


Krishna Kadam B'Arch MSc (International Urban Planning) Assistant Urban Designer
Krishna Kadam B'Arch MSc (International Urban Planning) Krishna completed his Masters degree in Urban Planning together with a Post Graduate Certificate in Planning Practice at Cardiff University after obtaining a degree in architecture from Karnataka University, India in July 2002. Krishna is currently working towards becoming a full Member of the RTPI.

Krishna joined WS Planning from Torfaen County Council in Wales in September 2005. Krishna is a member of the Company’s Urban Design Team. His role involves undertaking site surveys and preparation of drawings for a wide range of projects. Krishna also prepares Design and Access Statements to accompany planning applications submitted by the company on behalf of a wide range of clients.

Recently Krishna has assisted colleagues in the Development Control role undertaken by the company on behalf of Epsom and Ewell Borough council.


Jack Appleton BA (Hons) Graduate Planner
Jack Appleton BA (Hons) Jack is currently nearing completion of his Masters in Planning Policy & Practice at London South Bank University and hopes to graduate in October 2010. Jack joined WS Planning in March 2008 after obtaining a degree in Geography from Northumbria University, Newcastle.

Jack’s role with WS Planning involves the preparation of documents in support of planning applications, acting on behalf of private clients in preparing planning appeals, including written representation and hearing statements as well as accompanying Planning Inspectors on written representation site visits and assisting senior members of the company at hearings and Public Inquiries. Jack’s role also involves the carrying out of development control officer duties for Epsom & Ewell Borough Council. This role involves liaising with applicants, visiting sites and the preparation of officer reports for both delegated and committee related decisions.


James Udall BSc (Hons) Estate Management Planning Technician
James Udall BSc (Hons) Estate Management James completed a BSc (Hons) in Estate Management in 2005 at the University of Wales (NEWI). James joined WS Planning in October 2007 and started his Planning Policy and Practice Masters at London South Bank University in September 2010 with a view to becoming a qualified planner in within the next couple of years.

James’s current role involves providing technical support for the team which involves planning application and appeal work. He also undertakes research such as planning history checks.


Catherine Seldon MAAT Senior Office Administrator
Catherine Seldon MAAT Catherine joined the company on a part time basis in 2004, returning to work after having a family. A trained Accountancy Technician, Catherine has worked in all areas of accounts. Prior to having her family, Catherine was working in the Payroll Department of a local company with more than 800 employees.

Catherine is the first point of contact for all our clients. She has responsibility for dealing with all accounting matters and general administration duties and is continually updating and streamlining our office systems. Catherine provides admin support for the whole team.


Isobel Sangster BA (Hons) Office Administrator
Isobel Sangster BA (Hons) Isobel has been with WS Planning, on a part time basis, since 2003. Having worked for various companies and organisations, prior to joining WS Planning, Isobel's experience in the administrative field is broad and varied, including management of a Travellers Lodge.

During the Summer months, Isobel takes on Catherine's role in WS Planning so Catherine can spend time with her family during the school holidays.

It is Isobel's job to keep the administrative side of the office running smoothly over this time period, whilst bringing a fresh pair of eyes into the business in order to update and streamline the office systems.
